Backup Power for a Gas Furnace During a Winter Outage

A gas furnace still needs electricity for the blower, controls and ignition. During a blackout, the correct backup system depends on the furnace electrical nameplate, startup demand, voltage and how many hours you need heat.

Do not size a backup battery from furnace BTU alone. The gas input rating does not tell you the blower’s electrical demand.

What to check before buying

  • Furnace/blower voltage
  • Running watts or rated amps
  • Startup watts, LRA or motor data when available
  • Expected hours of blower operation per day
  • Whether the furnace is hardwired and requires an approved transfer/interlock solution

Why this matters
