For outage resilience alone, a selected-load portable or expandable system often gives better value than whole-home storage. A larger installed system becomes more compelling when it also supports frequent outages, time-of-use savings, solar self-consumption or critical 240V loads.
How to judge whether it is worth the cost
Compare total installed cost with the value of avoided food loss, basement flooding, work interruption, medical risk and generator ownership. Keep resilience value separate from optimistic utility savings.

Lower capital cost and easier deployment. Best when a few appliances create most of the outage risk.

Do not overstate the payback
Electric-bill savings depend on utility tariffs, export rules, battery round-trip losses, solar production and cycling strategy. A resilience purchase may still be worthwhile even when financial payback is weak—but those are different claims.
Solar availability can be poor during the same severe weather that causes an outage. Maintain energy reserve and an alternative charging or evacuation plan for critical needs.
