How to Measure Refrigerator Energy Use for Backup Power

Measure accumulated energy over a representative period, and keep that reading separate from the refrigerator’s running and starting power. A single watt reading cannot tell you how much battery energy an outage will require.

Prepare a measurement record

Identify the refrigerator model and the meter’s rating before connecting anything. Use a plug-in energy meter only where both equipment manuals permit it and its voltage, current and load ratings are appropriate. Do not open panels or improvise adapters to obtain a reading. If the connection cannot be measured this way, ask a qualified professional for an appropriate method.

Your record should contain the model, meter used, start and end times, accumulated kWh, temperature setting, room conditions and any unusual activity. Note an initial cooldown, unusually frequent door openings or recently loaded warm food. These details help determine whether the record represents the outage scenario.

Read kWh, not only instantaneous watts

Virginia Cooperative Extension explains energy estimation and the importance of appliance operating time, including cycling behavior. Read its appliance-energy guidance. This measurement workflow uses accumulated energy so that normal changes in demand are included in the observation.

  1. Record the starting meter reading and time.
  2. Leave the refrigerator in normal operation for a period representative of intended use. A longer record can capture behavior that a short snapshot misses; no fixed number of hours guarantees representativeness.
  3. Record the ending reading and time. Subtract the starting energy reading.
  4. Repeat under materially different conditions if those conditions matter to the backup plan.

A worked measurement log

Illustration, not a measured appliance: the meter increases from 2.10 to 3.60 kWh over 30 hours. Energy is 1.50 kWh, or 1,500 Wh. The observed average is 1,500 ÷ 30 = 50 W.

Projecting the same average over an 8-hour outage gives 400 Wh at the appliance. This extrapolation assumes comparable operation; it is not a guaranteed outage requirement.

Record that 400 Wh as an energy estimate. Do not label 50 W as the maximum running power, and do not use it as starting watts. The meter’s energy log and the equipment’s output requirements answer different questions.

For example, a hypothetical 438 kWh/year divided by 365 is 1.2 kWh/day. That arithmetic produces an annual-average baseline, not a known daily duty cycle, instantaneous wattage or starting demand. Mark the basis as a label estimate and replace it with relevant measurements when available.

Keep uncertainty visible

If the record missed important operating modes or the outage conditions will differ, write down that gap rather than adding an unexplained percentage. Compare multiple observations as separate scenarios. Battery conversion losses belong in the power-station assessment, not in the measured refrigerator Wh.
