Battery Backup for a Sump Pump

“Battery backup” can mean a separate DC backup pump or a battery inverter that powers your existing AC pump. Choose which failure you need to cover before comparing battery capacity. An inverter can supply electricity to a working pump; it cannot repair a failed motor, blocked discharge or stuck float.

Compare the two arrangements

  • Dedicated DC backup: a second pump, float/controller, compatible battery and charger. It may provide redundancy for some primary-pump failures, subject to installation and the shared discharge path.
  • AC pump on a battery inverter: retains the existing pump but requires verified motor-start capability, outlet compatibility and transfer behavior. A portable power station is not automatically a sump-pump UPS.

Zoeller’s Aquanot Fit 508 illustrates a separate 12 V backup pump with its own controller. Liberty’s 442 Series is another dedicated backup class. These examples explain system architecture; we have not tested or ranked them.

Water removal comes before runtime

A battery that lasts all night is not useful if the backup pump cannot keep up. Have the installer compare the pump curve at your total dynamic head with expected inflow. Vertical lift, pipe resistance and fittings affect the operating point. Do not use maximum flow and maximum head as though the pump delivers both simultaneously.

Specify the complete battery system

Confirm the battery chemistry and voltage approved for the charger, capacity at its stated discharge rate, enclosure, maintenance, alarms and replacement procedure. Do not substitute a lithium battery into a lead-acid charging system merely because both say “12 V.” Follow the selected system’s instructions and battery compatibility list.

A conceptual energy worksheet is average electrical draw × outage hours. If a hypothetical DC system averages 25 W over an 8-hour observation, it consumes 200 Wh during that period. This is not a prediction for another pump or storm. Battery discharge limits, temperature, age and the controller’s cutoff must also be considered; manufacturer runtime data under matching conditions is preferable.

Plan for an unattended outage

Ask how the system signals low battery, pump failure and high water, and whether alerts still work when home internet loses power. Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and testing schedule. A successful test today is not a guarantee against flooding.
