A sump pump backup must do two jobs: start the motor reliably and supply enough usable energy through the wettest part of the outage.

For a primary AC sump pump, start with the pump nameplate and measured startup event. A high-output portable power station can work for some installations, but no product should be treated as compatible until its output, outlet limit and overload duration are checked against the actual pump.
How to choose a sump pump battery backup
Size power and energy separately. The inverter must survive startup; the battery must cover the expected duty cycle. Use the worst credible storm condition rather than assuming the pump runs continuously or only occasionally.
1. Starting demand
Measure or obtain the motor’s startup watts or current. A vague surge number without duration is not enough for a difficult motor load.
2. Running load
Confirm running watts and the current limit of the exact AC outlet. Include any second pump or other load that may overlap.
3. Required runtime
Estimate on-time per hour during heavy inflow, then calculate appliance-side Wh and allow for conversion losses and reserve.

What can go wrong
A battery with enough Wh can still trip during motor startup. A unit that starts the pump can still run out early if groundwater inflow increases. Test from a high state of charge and simulate repeated cycles.
